A message from our Parliamentary Intern, Caitlin Downie

When I contacted NCCAR about volunteering, I never expected to be offered a parliamentary internship. Although I had always kept up-to-date with politics I had never imagined a career in politics. Despite my lack of background in the political realm, I eagerly took the position offered to me, knowing it would be an extraordinary experience. I was not to be disappointed.
During my 6 week long internship, I learned much about the inner workings of the federal government and the steps involved in the passing of bills. Especially important for my time in Jinny Sims’ office was the analysis of bills that were tabled by the Conservatives. I gained an in-depth knowledge of the New Democrat stance on various issues and learned to develop critic letters on these issues to be sent to constituents. Along with constituent correspondence, I drafted letters to ministers, and wrote to funding organizations in support of constituent proposals. I also drafted op-ed articles and even wrote a speech to be read in the House of Commons.
This internship helped me develop and broaden my writing skills as well as my editing ability. The real life implications of the pieces I was writing were immensely rewarding. My research skills were also challenged and I needed to become more creative with my searches for information. In this way, I became more familiar with the sources offered that many citizens are simply unaware of. In addition to the skills I developed, I also learned a great deal about the challenges that many Canadians and potential Canadians face. While working with those concerned with the recent changes to immigration policy, I was able to link the political realm with my own interests in immigration and multiculturalism.
I am extremely grateful for the opportunity NCCAR gave me. I was able to develop my writing, editing, and research skills as well as my communication skills. Furthermore, this internship opened my eyes to the wealth of possibilities for jobs within the government.
Thank you so much for this wonderful experience.
Sincerely,
Caitlin Downie
