Join the National Council on Canada-Arab Relations (NCCAR) and NECEF Sabeel for a very special event in Montreal on Thursday June 4th to commemorate the Nakba (May 15) and the 9th year of the blockade of Gaza (June 24th).

The Nakba (or “Catastrophe”) refers to the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians preceding and following the Israeli Declaration of Independence in 1948. About 700,000 Palestinians are estimated to have fled or been expelled from their towns and villages that were later depopulated or destroyed. The refugees were never allowed to return home.

About the Event

This fundraising event focuses on the situation in Gaza and scrutinizes how Gaza is effectively the museum of the Nakba: it reflects the plight of Palestinian refugees since 1948 as well as the ongoing destruction of Palestinian homes, lives and society. Potential options for Israel and the Palestinians moving forward will be evaluated.

The Reverend Robert Assaly, Chair of NECEF-Sabeel (which includes Canadian Friends of Sabeel) and past Anglican Vicar of Gaza, just visited Gaza in December 2014. He will share poignant observations and challenging reflections on the harsh realities of life in Gaza.

After a buffet dinner, Peter Larson, Chair of the National Education Committee on Israel-Palestine (NECIP), a committee of NCCAR, will analyze the recent brutal attacks on Gaza by Israel with a focus on the true root causes for Israel’s perception of Gaza as a threat. He will evaluate what Israel’s options might be moving forward and the implications for the Palestinians and the international community.

NEW: We are delighted to add Dr. Tarek Loubani, a Canadian emergency physician, to our program. He will describe a fascinating project he is spearheading entitled “Empower Gaza” that will bring solar energy panels to four major Gaza hospitals to avoid blackouts and death for many patients.

A Q&A session will follow each presentation. The presentations will be in English with Q&A in English and French.

SYNOPSIS
This film raises challenging questions about the issue of Jewish migration from the Arab world.

Casablanca-born filmmaker Kathy Wazana set out to discover why hundreds of thousands of Jews left Morocco in the 1960s, believing their Arab homeland had become enemy territory. What she found was a country still grieving the loss of its Jewish population.

They Were Promised the Sea is an investigation into the circumstances that led to the mass migration of Jews from Morocco, an exodus inextricably linked to the Partition of Palestine, the creation of the State of Israel, and the dispossession and exile of the Palestinian people.

DETAILS
Filmmaker Kathy Wazana is an Arab Jew from Morocco. In her controversial documentary They Were Promised the Sea, she casts a light on the identity of Arab Jews and challenges the very notion of the concept of who is ‘enemy.’

Wazana set out to discover why hundreds of thousands of Jews left Morocco in the 1960s, believing their Arab homeland had become enemy territory. What she found was a country still grieving the loss of its Jewish population. Her “enemy” welcomed her home and claimed her as one of their own.

Her investigation reveals a dramatic series of events that put an end to 2,000 years of Jewish-Arab coexistence. It exposes the calculations and political maneuvers that led to the mass exodus of Jews from their ancestral homeland, and to the dispossession and exile of the Palestinian people.

With exceptional access to a cast of characters that includes a Jewish advisor to the King of Morocco, the director of the only Jewish museum in the Arab world, a Muslim-Moroccan musician/jeweler who longs for the return of his Jewish friends from Israel, and a Moroccan- Israeli living in exile in New York, whose poetry is dedicated to Palestinian national poet Mahmoud Darwish, Kathy Wazana brings this largely suppressed history to a North American audience for whom the identity of Arab Jews is often perceived as an oxymoron.

Told through Wazana’s personal lens and the journey of a second-generation Moroccan Israeli, the doc is stunningly shot in Morocco, Israel and New York by Ali Kazimi, Martin Duckworth, and Zoe Dirse as a musical road movie through the dramatic landscapes of the Atlas mountains in southern Morocco.
