NCCAR cautiously optimistic about Libya

August 26, 2011 (Ottawa): The National Council on Canada Arab Relations (NCCAR) is following closely the latest developments in Libya.  The rebel forces backed by the National Transitional Council of Libya (NTCL) have gained control of the majority of neighborhoods in the capital Tripoli including the seizure of Colonel Mouammar Gadhafi’s compound.  However, we are concerned by continuing resistance from pro-Gahhafi remnants and the danger to civilians being caught in the crossfire.

“We are hopeful that this will be last chapter of the conflict which has cost the lives of many innocent Libyans who were calling for legitimate political and socio-economic reforms,” stated David Comerford, President of NCCAR. “The world now is holding its breath in the hope that this will usher in a new beginning for the Libyan people whose liberties have been enormously restricted under the Gadhafi regime.”

With the deaths of two Libyan Canadians, Abdulhamid Darat and Nader Benrewin, the conflict has touched Canadians directly, in particular the Libyan-Canadian community.  “NCCAR extends its deepest sympathies and condolences to their families,” said Mr. Comerford.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) accredited Abubaker Karmos as the official interim charge d’affaires on Thursday, representing the NTCL.  With this further legitimization of the NTCL, the NCCAR strongly urges the Council to move quickly to bring security to the Libyan population and to work actively toward democratic and social reform.

Le 30 Août, 2011 (Ottawa): le Conseil National des Relations Canado-Arabes suit de près les nouvelles en Libye.  Les forces rebelles, soutenues par le Conseil National de Transition (CNT), ont pris la majorité des cartiers dans la capitale de Tripoli.  Toutefois, la résistance provenant des forces Gadhafiennes et les dangers posés aux civils nous inquiètent.

«Nous espérons que cela sera la dernière chapitre de ce conflit, qui prit les vies de plusieurs innocents Libyens; des Libyens qui revendiquaient de réels réformes politique et socio-économiques» dit David Comerford, Président du CNRCA.  «Le monde retient son souffle dans l’espoir que cela introduira un nouveau début pour le peuple de la Libye, dont les libertés furent énormément restreints sous Gadhafi.»

Après les morts de deux Canado-libyens, Abdulhamid Darat et Nader Benrewin, le conflit toucha les Canadiens directement, en particulier la communauté Canado-Libyen.  «le CNRCA offre ses condoléances et sympathies aux familles en deuils» dit M. Comerford.

Jeudi, le Département des Affaires Étrangères et Commerce International accrédita le titre de charge d’affaires officiel à Abubaker Karmos, représentant du CNT.  Compte tenu de ce légitimation, le CNRCA exhorte fortement le Conseil d’agir rapidement afin d’amener la sécurité aux Libyens et de travailler activement envers la réforme sociale et démocratique.
