NCCAR Intern Matthew Gallagher reflects on his first week as an intern in the office of Ahmed Hussen, M.P. for York South – Weston

What a week! I have just finished the first few days of my placement in the office of MP Ahmed Hussen through the National Council on Canada-Arab Relations (NCCAR) Internship Program. Despite being told that I would be in the thick of Parliamentary action, nothing could have prepared me for the amazing experience of assisting Mr. Hussen with his duties on the Standing Committee for Justice and Human Rights.

My first day consisted of briefing Mr. Hussen on recent developments to the bill being studied by the committee, and summarizing the statements made by witnesses the week before. The best part is, all this occurred while walking from Mr. Hussen’s Parliamentary office on Sparks street to the Hill! Once there, I observed the deliberation and debate of the Parliamentary Committee. Watching MP’s on CPAC is one thing, but actually witnessing democracy in action was a truly incredible moment.

I spent the rest of the week assisting Mr. Hussen with other important Parliamentary business. I prepared important communication material to his constituents, researched bills that would soon reach the Justice Committee, along with many other activities.

This week was an exhilarating introduction to Federal Politics. I look forward to what the coming weeks have in store and to everything I will learn from my internship with NCCAR.
