NCCAR has recently had the wonderful opportunity to move to the heart of downtown Ottawa in the beautiful Fairmont Chateau Laurier, literally steps way from Parliament Hill.

We’re settling into our new office, part of the Regus Business Centre, and are very grateful to the generous donor who made this all possible. We are looking forward to the benefits this location will give us to better connect with our members and volunteers, various organizations,  parliamentarians and the media.

I am pleased to present to you NCCAR’s 2013 Year In Review:

• Our flagship Parliamentary Internship program, running on its 17th year, placed 4 young Canadians on the Hill.
• Our Media Team expanded to a dedicated team of 10 volunteers delivering comprehensive media coverage.
• We successfully organized 2 film, dinner and discussion events in Ottawa and Montreal.
• Board Members appeared on national news and published several opinion pieces.
• NCCAR hosted 3 roundtable discussions in collaboration with Dialogue for Democracy.
• Our Israel/Palestine committee (NECIP) hosted 2 large speaker events, organized an Israel/Palestine tour, and hosted an advocate event on Palestinian refugees.

These activities were only made possible with the support and participation of our active members and donors. We believe 2014 will bring even more successes.  NCCAR is currently undertaking a strategic exercise to focus on specific issues, such as human rights and democracy, that would further engage our supporters and members. On Friday April 5th, NCCAR board members Peter Larson and Rula Odeh along with several members participated in the memorial service of Campbell Douglas Robertson to celebrate his life and many contributions.

Cam was a wonderful friend as well as an NCCAR member and supporter. He valued the universal application of international law and human rights and was a regularly published letter-writer to editors of Canadian newspapers to advocate for these principles. Cam’s obituary can be found here.

We share this quote from one of Cam’s published letters: “It is easy to forget that human rights are really supposed to be universal. That means we must exempt no country from adhering to international law and its application to human rights — not our possible foes, not our friends and yes, not ourselves.” Campbell Robertson, Ottawa

Members were impressed to hear about NCCAR’s many accomplishments in the President’s Report of 2011-2012 presented by Sanabel Elrayes.  Our Financial Report of 2010-2011 was also presented and showed significant financial progress. Members re-appointed NCCAR’s auditor Karim Chebbi.

We are also very excited to have three new board members join us, all of which will add a unique and progressive contribution to the team. NCCAR welcomes Fadi El-Tibi, Raja Khouri, and George Salhani. Congratulations!

In addition, with the re-election of Sanabel Elrayes as President,  NCCAR will continue to be driven by leadership, passion and dedication!

At the AGM, NCCAR received encouraging and energizing comments regarding it’s progress and accomplishments over the past year, as well as valuable feedback for areas of improvement. Overall, the AGM served as a great opportunity to network and reconnect with NCCAR members who have helped support NCCAR’s ongoing and ambitious activities.

Moving forward, NCCAR is excited to work with a dynamic team and leverage the expertise of both returning and new board members in driving our organization’s mission and key programs. However, NCCAR will always count on the support of our members!

NCCAR’s year kicked off with insightful events that portrayed diverse experiences and opinions on ongoing issues in the Middle East. It ended with a wonderful visit from the Nobel Peace Laureate, Tawakkol Karman – a boost of inspiration that will carry us strong into the next year.

In between, NCCAR hosted panels, roundtable discussions, and documentary nights on a wide range of issues including women in politics and the Arab Spring. We expanded our annual flagship Parliamentary internship program  for young Canadians. A sampling of this year’s accomplishments is available here.

NCCAR board members were individually active through strengthening ties with MPs and Senators, publishing opinion pieces, leading our media team that curates NCCAR’s acclaimed Daily Media Scan, and participating in an educational Israel-Palestine tour.

We achieved our 2012 NCCAR strategic priorities and programs that we set out at the beginning of 2012. This was only made possible with the support and participation of our active members and donors. Info on how to make a contribution are below.

NCCAR National Conference and Annual General Meeting

The National Council on Canada Arab Relations (NCCAR) invites you to reserve November 26-27 for its National Conference and Annual General Meeting to be held in the National Capital Region.  With the continuing uprisings and winds of change sweeping the Arab world, NCCAR will organise a national conference to discuss and address many of the key issues affecting Canadian foreign policy and our relations with Arab governments and peoples of the region.

Our key note speaker for the event`s Gala Dinner on Saturday, November 26 is Clovis Maksoud, former Ambassador of the Arab League to the USA and the UN and presently Professor of International Relations and Director of the Center for Global Studies at American University in Washington, DC.  The Conference Opening Address will be delivered by Paul Heinbecker, former Canadian Ambassador to the UN and currentlythe Director of the Laurier Centre for Global Relations, and Distinguished Fellow, International Relations, at the independent research Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI).

The conference will be open to the general public and constituencies interested in the Conference theme, “Winds of Change in the Arab World:  Implications for Canada Arab Relations.” The full agenda, cost and registration process will be communicated in late September as the details are worked out.

All members and supporters are encouraged to attend this event and the AGM which will follow on Sunday, November 27.
