Mr Salmem Mubarak Alshafi as Ambassador. The Canadian government intends to reciprocate with the establishment of an Embassy of Canada in Doha, the capital of Qatar sometime this fall.

There are now 14 Arab embassies based in Ottawa with Oman and Bahrain being represented by their Washington embassies.

Qatar is an important regional player which the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade website acknowledges in stating that ”Qatar is continuing to play an important role at the international level, one that far exceeds the country’s geographic size …and has a dynamic foreign policy which includes acting as intermediary in several regional conflicts.”.

Nearly 5,000 Canadians reside and work in Qatar. As of June 2011, Qatar Airways will be offering direct flights between Montreal and Doha three times per week. This will make it easier for individuals to travel between Canada and Qatar.

Trade relations between Canada and Qatar are expected to expand significantly as Qatar’s economy continues to grow and as Canadian exporters and investors become more familiar with the unparalleled infrastructure-based opportunities it offers. In 2009, Canadian exports to Qatar were valued at $224 million. Areas of growth include gas-based industries, construction, healthcare, education, and high tech. Major Canadian companies like Forrec, SNC-Lavalin and Sick Kids Hospital are also established in Qatar, along with other companies in the high tech and service sectors.

Among the most important projects in Qatar that involve Canada is a complete technical college in Doha operated by Newfoundland and Labrador’s College of the North Atlantic (curriculum design, teaching and overall management). The college, which opened in 2002, has hired about 600 Canadian staff and enrols about 2000 students. The University of Calgary opened a nursing school in Qatar in 2007.
